The Old Head of Kinsale

If you have yet to play golf on the Emerald Isle then this is the place to start. On The Old Head of Kinsale just south of Cork there is thee most spectacular golf course. Despite not having held a major golf tournament this course has golfers from all over the world travelling to play it. Quite simply a stunning location on the South Coast of Ireland and a great golf course layout. The facilities are top notch and the Irish welcome and service is first class. Old Head is consistently on a par with the likes of Pebble Beach golf resort and The Old Course Hotel and Resort St Andrews. This year the weather was so good you would be mistaken for thinking it was the south of France. We had three days of near perfect blues skies and enjoyed playing on Fota Island, Old Head and Bantry Bay. The standard of golf was surprisingly high but the eventual winner of the three day event was Nick Wright, see below. A well deserved recipient of The Ziggy Trophy, well done. The next event will be in Biarritz on August 30th. Will

New Bunkers 2016

This winter the club have engaged the services of Tom MacKenzie, a well respected golf course architect and this year's president of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects, to plan and oversee a complete redesign of our bunking on The Old Course at The Royal Automobile Club. Herbert Fowler's original design was in need of some updating due to modern golf club technology and also the fact that 100 years ago the golf ball just simply did not fly the vast distances we see today.
MJ Abbott golf course contractors are doing such a great job, the Old Course will never have looked so good!

New Golf Swing Studio

The Royal Automobile Club is proud to announce the opening of the new Herbert Fowler Swing Studio. This state of the art golf simulator is a fantastic addition to the golf facilities and can be used for lessons, for a new club fitting or even ball fitting, the importance of which is vastly underestimated. You can also book the room for private use should you wish to play with some friends at one of the many courses on the system. We will also be running nearest the pin competitions and longest drive events throughout the year.

The Dutch Golf Course

This fantastic golf course is one of the European Tour's architects latest project. Ross McMurray designed the course along with Colin Montgomery and the result is superb. Joost Luiten, who is attached there due the the wonderful facilities, requested the greens be prepared to Augusta standard before the US Masters in order to help his preparation. Head greenskeeper Niall Richardson was happy to help and the result was magical.

Although they narrowly missed out on hosting the Ryder Cup they have secured the KLM Dutch Open for the next three years. Exciting times ahead.

Royal St Georges Golf Trip 2014

Royal St Georges is a quality golf course that has challenged the best Golfers in the world over the years. The fact it's also the closest Open Championship venue to London on the Kent coast 90 miles away means it could be overrun with golfing enthusiasts. However, due to its exclusive membership and only permitting a small number of 4 ball greenfees only on a Tuesday it is always a treat to play. A select group of Royal Automobile Club members decided to brave the winter weather and tackle the the intimidating links. Blessed with near perfect conditions for the time of year we had some incredible scores returned, 3 on par or better with their handicap. Isidore Carivalis scored 36 points to take third spot, Gary Baker managed 37 points which would usually be enough for the win but Ian Richmond scored a remarkable 79 gross for 38 stableford points and claimed the prestigious Ziggy Trophy from St Andrews. Well played to all competitors, many thanks for taking part in a great day on the links. The Ziggy Trophy will be contested for again on March the 2nd 2015 at Valderrama in Spain.
